NEW DELHI, June 2 (Xinhua) -- In a freak incident, a wild elephant Friday strayed into a human settlement in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and killed four persons, officials said.

"The incident took place in the state's Coimbatore district this morning. The wild elephant first entered into a home and attacked two persons, including a 12-year-old girl, while they were asleep and killed them," a senior forest official said.

The elephant did not stop there. It went on to attack two women who were relieving themselves in an open field outside the house. "The two women were also killed on the spot, while two others who were nearby have sustained injuries," the official said.

The bodies of the victims have been sent for an autopsy, while the injured admitted to a local hospital, a police official said.

"Efforts are on to track down the wild elephant and chase it out," the forest official said.

This is the second incident of wild elephant attack this week. Just two days ago, two forest guards were attacked while they tried to drive away a 25-year-old wild elephant in Coimbatore's Kuniyamuthur area.
