Senior Al-Shabaab commander surrenders

MOGADISHU, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A senior Al-Shabaab commander, Bishar Mumin Farah on Wednesday surrendered to Somali National Army (SNA) based in Hiiraan region in central Somalia, officials said.

Somali Minister of Information Abdirahman Omar Osman said that the militant was the group's commander for Mudug region.

"Al-Shabaab commander in Mudug region surrendered to Somali National Army in Hiiraan region," Osman said.

SNA's 52nd Division Commander, Gen. Mohamed Ahmed said that the commander was carrying two AK 47 guns when he surrendered to the army.

"The Al-Shabaab commander, who surrendered to the army, was in charge of guerrilla wars, he has been in Hiiraan region for fresh battle during the Ramadan month, but his defection is loss for the group," Osman said.

There was no immediate comment from the militant Al-Shabaab group which has increased its attacks against the government. Enditem
