India's prisoner-swap pacts with Australia, Kazakhstan come into effect

NEW DELHI, May 30 (Xinhua) -- India said on Tuesday that pacts with Australia and Kazakhstan on exchange of prisoners under which convicted persons would be able to serve their jail terms in their respective countries, have come into effect.

The Indian Home Ministry said in a gazette notification that the two agreements -- one between India and Australia and the other between India and Kazakhstan -- concerning transfer of sentenced persons is effective from May 26.

The pact between India and Australia was signed on November 18, 2014, and it was ratified by India on December 16, 2015, and by Australia on November 21, 2016. Similarly the agreement between India and Kazakhstan was signed by two countries on July 8, 2015. It was ratified by India on October 9, 2015, and by Kazakhstan on March 4, 2016.

Australia and Kazakhstan are not only the two countries with whom India has entered into prisoner transfer treaties.

New Delhi has signed such pacts with many other countries, including Britain, Mauritius, Bulgaria, France, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bangladesh, Brazil, Israel, UAE, Italy, Turkey, Maldives, Thailand, Russia, Kuwait and Vietnam.
