HANOI, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam is now free of bird flu, and foot-and-mouth and blue-ear diseases, its veterinary agency announced on Tuesday.

Over the past 21 days, all cities and provinces across Vietnam have detected no outbreaks of bird flu, foot-and-mouth disease, or porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (commonly called blue-ear disease), meeting criteria for announcing the country free of the three diseases, said the Department of Animal Health under Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

"However, we are facing high risks of bird flu and blue-ear disease hitting fowls and pigs in some localities in the coming time," an official from the department told Xinhua.

Some strains of bird flu viruses, including H7N9, H5N2 and H5N8, which have yet to appear in Vietnam, can penetrate into it via transport, trade and consumption of smuggled fowls and poultry products, the official noted.
