5.4-magnitude quake strikes off Japan's Okinawa, no tsunami warning

TOKYO, May 30 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 struck off Miyakojima Island in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, at 15:20 local time, the weather agency here said.

No tsunami warning was issued.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) the quake, which measured 1 on the Japanese seismic scale which peaks at 7, struck at a latitude of 24.1 degrees north and a longitude of 126.5 degrees east, and at a depth of 10 km.

The quake measured 1 on Japan's seismic scale in some parts of Miyakojima City including the towns of Hirara-shimozato, Gusukube and Hirara-ikema.

There have been no immediate reports of injury or damage as a result of the quake.
