WASHINGTON, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Zbigniew Brzezinski, former national security adviser to ex-U.S. President Jimmy Carter, died at age 89 on Friday.

"My father passed away peacefully tonight," Brzezinski's daughter Mika announced on social media Friday night. She called him "the most inspiring, loving and devoted father any girl could ever have."

Brzezinski was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1928 and became a U.S. citizen in 1958. He served as a counselor for former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson from 1966 to 1968 and was Carter's national security adviser from 1977 to 1981.

After the Carter presidency, Brzezinski became a professor of American foreign policy at Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and a scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank.
