VIENTIANE, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith has called on health officials and the local authorities across the country to closely monitor their areas in the fight against dengue.

In response to this instruction, local officials and health authorities are urging people to clear potential mosquito breeding sites around their homes and workplaces to help curb the spread of the virus, according to Lao state-run media Vientiane Times on Friday.

Health authorities in Lao capital Vientiane have announced that the prevalence of dengue fever is higher this year compared to the same period in 2016.

The PM order called on the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism; Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education and Sports to make additional efforts to remind the public to prevent the virus from spreading.

All local authorities in the country including health officials have been called on to closely monitor the local situation, promote awareness campaigns, coordinate with a multi-sectoral and development partner response and mobilize various resources.

Schools, hospitals, factories, hotels, restaurants, tourist facilities and offices should organize cleaning activities to remove any sources of stagnant water to slow mosquito breeding, according to the PM order.

The order also focuses on long-term prevention in addition to treatment, seen as key to combating the disease. The focus is squarely on local communities to keep their surroundings clean, while focusing on killing mosquitoes and their larva inside and near their areas.
