GENEVA, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Swiss local media Tribune de Geneve reported Friday that a disaster was narrowly avoided earlier this month when a drone came close to colliding with a Swiss International Airlines plane.

Citing information released today by the Swiss Transportation Investigation Board (STSB), the Swiss newspaper said that the Airbus A330 was 20 km southeast of its final destination when the near-miss took place early in the morning on May 6.

The long-haul flight from the Tanzanian city of Dar-es-Salaam was carrying 185 passengers and 12 crew when it was endangered by the drone.

The Swiss daily indicated that STSB has been flagging more and more such incidents over the years and that an investigation into the incident has been opened.

STSB has also called for new measures to avoid potentially fatal collisions in a bid to ensure that drones and other flying objects be detected quicker by ground-level and plane radars.
