CAIRO, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Egypt strongly condemned the terrorist attacks that killed 14 policemen in Kenya in two consecutive bombings, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Friday.

"Egypt backs the Kenyan government and people in combating terrorism," said Ahmad Abu Zeid, spokesperson of the foreign ministry.

Five police officers were killed on Thursday when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Kenya in an attack claimed by Shabaab Islamists, a Somali-led jihadist group linked to Al-Qaeda, a day after nine police died in similar blasts.

The officers had been deployed to the restive northeastern region of Kenya to take part in an operation against the Somali-led militants after two separate roadside bombs on Wednesday.

Local officials accused Shabaab Islamists movement of increasing its terrorist attacks near the borders with Somalia.
