S.Korean president's approval rating at 88 pct in weekly poll

SEOUL, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Approval rating for South Korean President Moon Jae-in reached nearly 90 percent, helping raise the support for his ruling party, a weekly survey showed Friday.

According to the Gallup Korea poll, 88 percent of respondents expected Moon to do well in his management of state affairs. It was up 1 percentage point from the previous week.

The results were based on a survey of 1,003 voters conducted from Tuesday to Thursday. It has 3.1 percentage points in margin of error with a 95 percent confidence level.

It was much higher than support for Park Geun-hye, Moon's predecessor, which was tallied in the third week of presidency.

Moon was sworn in as president on May 10 after winning a sweeping victory in the presidential by-election that was caused by Park's removal from office over corruption allegations.

Helped by public support for Moon, the ruling Democratic Party posted 51 percent in support scores. It was up 3 percentage points from the previous week.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party came next with an 8 percent support, followed by the centrist People's Party with 7 percent.

The minor progressive Justice Party and the minor conservative Righteous Party logged the identical support rate of 6 percent.

About 57 percent of the Liberty Korea Party supporters also gave a positive outlook for Moon's handling of state affairs.

It was mainly attributable to Moon's recent activities, which were viewed as folksy and people-friendly.

Also welcomed by the general public was Moon's appointment of reformist figures who assumed the key posts in the presidential office and the cabinet.
