QUITO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa revealed Thursday that he is in hospital, recovering from pneumonia.

Writing on Twitter, he told his follower that "from Saturday, I felt very ill: headache, high blood pressure, chills, fever, extreme fatigue."

He was checked into Quito's Carlos Andrade Marin hospital on Wednesday, where a medical checkup diagnosed him with pneumonia, following his handing over of power to President Lenin Moreno.

On Wednesday night, the ruling PAIS Alliance stated that Correa "saw his health diminish, worsened by the lack of rest from his busy activities and intense schedule in recent days."

Correa commented on Twitter that he felt so bad he almost had to cancel the handover of power ceremony but kept going to avoid raising questions in the eyes of the world and so as to not let down his successor, Moreno.

After ten years in power, the former president is to take a step back from political life, and devote himself to his family and academic pursuits. He will move to Belgium, the country of origin of his wife, Anne Malherbe Gosselin.
