KIEV, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday discussed bilateral ties and cooperation over the phone, the Ukrainian presidential press service said in a statement.

In particular, the two leaders praised the recent ratification of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the Canadian Senate, the statement said.

During the talk, Poroshenko voiced his hope for the intensification of visa liberalization dialogue between the two countries.

The two leaders also discussed cooperation in the defense sector and coordinated the schedule of contacts at the highest level, it said.

Ukraine and Canada concluded the negotiations on the FTA in 2015 and signed the deal in July 2016. The agreement is awaiting the signature of the Governor General of Canada.

Once the agreement goes into force, Ukraine and Canada will immediately eliminate duties of 86 percent and 99.9 percent imports respectively, thereby benefiting exporters and consumers of both countries.
