BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's consumer price index (CPI) fell by 0.6 percent in April, compared to the previous month, owing to a decrease in prices of transport and recreation, according to the latest statistics released by Brunei's Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) on Thursday.

In its monthly CPI report, JPKE said that both Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index and Non-Food Index decreased by 0.1 percent and 0.7 percent respectively.

The decrease in the overall CPI in April was largely contributed by Transport and Recreation and Culture by 2.0 percent and 1.1 percent respectively.

This was due to readjustment of air ticket prices as well as package holidays/pilgrimages to off-peak season prices after experiencing the school-term holiday.

On a year-on-year basis, the CPI for April also declined by 0.6 percent compared to April 2016.

CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period. Brunei's list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household.
