BERLIN, May 24 (Xinhua) -- German internet users are increasingly aware of the dangers in the internet but are less willing to apply corresponding safety measures, according to the Safety Index published Wednesday by the German organization for internet safety (DsiN).

Criminal cyberattacks have increased significantly, the DsiN reported. They are carried out more professionally and the progress of digitization provides an increasingly larger target.

"To counter the threat situation in the internet, we need to intensify educational work for consumers," said agency managing director Thomas Kremer, "IT security must be anchored early on in education in order to be able to deal with changing risks in everyday life."

In 2016, the German government declared it would strengthen educational work in cooperation with DsiN.

Germany will start the education program Digital Education Meets School in the next school year to include digital safety competences in school education. "IT security and protection of data must become components of the education in Germany. This way, we are creating the prerequisites for safe behavior in the internet," said Kremer.
