SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, May 24 (Xinhua) -- At least five civilians were wounded Wednesday in a grenade attack in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The grenade attack was carried out at Imam Sahib village in Shopian district, about 52 km south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This evening unknown militants hurled a grenade on police camp here which missed the intended target and exploded on road wounding five civilians," a police official posted in Shopian told Xinhua. "The civilians were hit by splinters and immediately taken to hospital for treatment."

Officials said police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) contingents cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to nab the militants. However, there were no reports of any arrests until late.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack.

Meanwhile, unknown gunmen shot at a political worker affiliated with pro-India Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Barzulla area of Srinagar city late Wednesday evening. Police suspect militants to be behind the attack.

The worker was immediately removed to hospital in critical condition, police said.

Militants in the region usually target families and individuals for their possible links with Indian police and defense agencies. Even people having associations with pro-India political parties are targeted at times.

Separatist movement and guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between militants and Indian troops takes place intermittently across the region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
