PARIS, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Risks of terrorist attacks remained "at very high level" in France where Islamic State militants had struck the country several times since 2015, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on Wednesday.

"The terrorist threat carried by Daesh (Islamic State) remains at a very high level in France," Philippe warned after a defense council at the Elysee Palace.

"The threat is based on the IS incitement of its affiliates living in each country to commit isolated actions and on the infiltration into France or Europe of operational individuals to form terrorist cells," he told reporters.

With vigilance already increased at high level, the prime minister added that "instructions to strengthen security had been given to the prefects."

In the wake of Manchester bombing which left 22 victims, French government is seeking to prolong the state of emergency, imposed after Nov. 2015 series of shootings and bombings, to until Nov. 1.

Reiterating "full determination to ensure the safety of the French," Philippe said to maintain border control and anti-terrorism security alert system to guarantee calm at home.

France remains in a state of emergency and on high alert over possible terrorist attacks due to its military intervention in Syria, Iraq and the Sahel region.

It has already deployed 10,000 of gendarmes and police units to protect public places and sensitive sites after a group of terrorists killed 130 people in the venues of Paris two years ago.

However, several more attacks have occurred since, with the bloodiest on Bastille Day last year in Nice where a man drove his truck into a crowd, killing 86 people.
