MANAMA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Fifty fugitives wanted for terror crimes were arrested on Tuesday by Bahrain police in a major security operations conducted in southern suburb of Manama.

The Interior Ministry said Tuesday that several policemen were injured in the violent clashes with members of terrorist cell in Duraz village, the home of top opposition cleric, Shaikh Isa Qassim.

"Police was deployed on a targeted security operation in Duraz when it came under attack by members of a terrorist cell who hurled fire bombs, forcing the security authorities to respond proportionately," the ministry said.

The ministry said the security operation was undertaken to protect public order and to ensure the safety and security of residents.

"A series of arrests were made, including 50 fugitives, some of whom had escaped from Jaw Prison.

Shaikh Isa Qassim was sentenced to one year suspended jail term earlier this week on charges of money laundering and collecting funds illegally.
