HANOI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam is facing stockpiles of over 700,000 tons of sugar, the biggest amount since 2014, mainly due to rampant smuggling.
A large amount of cheap sugar, mostly from Thailand, has been smuggled into Vietnam this year via border provinces, the Vietnam Sugar and Sugarcane Association told Xinhua on Tuesday.
In previous years, most of the sugar was smuggled via southern provinces which border Cambodia, said the association.
The association estimated that 400,000 tons of sugar or 30 percent of the product consumed in Vietnam annually are smuggled.
