JERUSALEM, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Israel's military said Tuesday that militants in the Sinai Peninsula had fired a rocket towards Israel on Tuesday morning, amidst the second day of U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to the region.

A military spokesperson said in a statement that at around 8:00 (around 5:00 am GMT) "a projectile was launched towards southern Israel from the Sinai Peninsula."

The spokesperson added that the rocket might have exploded before it touched the ground and forces are searching the area for signs of impact.

No injuries were reported, the spokesperson said.

The incident came as Trump was about to travel from Jerusalem to Bethlehem where he will meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Later on Tuesday, Trump is expected to travel back to Jerusalem where he will give his concluding remarks.

In April, a rocket fired by a local branch of the Islamic State had struck a greenhouse in the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel.
