MOSCOW, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday sent a congratulatory message to Hassan Rouhani on his re-election as Iranian president.

According to the Kremlin, Putin confirmed his readiness in the message to go on with active joint work in the further development of Russian-Iranian partner cooperation in bilateral and international affairs.

Putin also expressed his confidence in the further successful implementation of bilateral agreements.

Earlier in the day, Iran's incumbent President Rouhani won the country's presidential election, which will give him a second four-year term.

Tehran is a major supporter of Moscow on many Middle Eastern issues, and both countries, together with Turkey, are working as mediators for a political settlement of the Syrian civil war.
