ALGIERS, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Friday urged the elite to participate in tackling the current economic crisis, in a bid to block the road to the "orchestrated maneuvers" against the North African nation.

"Competition between the national elite will undoubtedly raise the level of consciousness within the society and thus bar the way to the maneuvers being orchestrated both inside and outside the country, aiming at sowing doubt and despair among the people," Bouteflika said in a message at the 61st Anniversary of Student Day, celebrated in Algeria every May 19.

The head of state urged the elite to explain the reasons of the economic crisis hitting Algeria and suggest practical solutions, adding that the North African nation has to work on diversifying its economy in a bid to get rid of full dependency on hydrocarbons.

"The contribution of our elite in the form of expertise that can be used by the government and all institutions involved in the management of the country, is an imperative need," concluded Bouteflika.

Algeria has been struggling to diversify its economy by providing several advantages for investors in sectors of tourism, industry and agriculture.

The government was forced to reduce expenditure for 2017 over oil revenues decline, given that hydrocarbons account for 94 percent of the North African nation's total exports.
