Combo photo taken on May 12, 2017 shows Wei Yangdi, 43, in front of his old house (up) and new house (bottom) at Fanyang Village of Wuzhishan City, south China's Hainan Province. Wei's family, which was on the village's list of the impoverished families, got government subsidies of over 41,000 yuan (about 5,946 U.S. dollars) to build their new house. They moved from their old 50-sq-meter house into a new one of 80 sq meters in January this year. To improve poverty-stricken villagers' housing conditions has become a priority in local government's poverty alleviation efforts since 2016. A total of 44 families have built their new houses last year, and another 40 impoverished families are expected to live better in bigger houses this year. The villagers expressed their appreciation for the country's poverty alleviation policy, saying that they could not afford to build new homes without the government help. (Xinhua/Shen Hong)
