NEW DELHI, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and 30 others went missing after a footbridge they were standing on collapsed in western Indian state of Goa, officials said Friday.

The footbridge collapsed over Sanvordem river at Curchorem village in South Goa district on Thursday evening.

Two bodies have been fished out and search for missing was going on.

"Last evening a footbridge caved in here during which a crowd of around 50 fell into the river," a senior police official said. "We have fished out two bodies late in the night and search for missing is going on."

According to police some people managed to swim towards river bank at their own, while others were rescued.

Locals said the footbridge was in dilapidated condition and had been closed for traffic for the past four years.

State-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) Friday said some of the missing are feared to be dead.

AIR said 14 people rescued from river were admitted at nearby hospitals.

According to eyewitnesses, the crowd had gathered on the bridge to watch fire and emergency services personnel rescuing a youth who had jumped into the river in a suicide bid.

The rescue operation was going on until late night.

"We fear some people might be trapped in the debris of the bridge and today we are going to carry out search in the river," the police official said.

India navy was called in for rescue operations. Officials said navy divers with Geminis boats were carrying out searches.
