WINDHOEK, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Namibian Capital's Windhoek Municipality officially held a ground breaking ceremony here on Thursday to mark the start of the construction of the affordable housing units for middle income earners who are also first time buyers.
Muesee Kazapua, Mayor of the City of Windhoek, said the aim is to provide affordable housing to middle income earners in light of escalating housing prices in the city.
"It is our hope that the development and construction of the houses will accelerate housing supply in the City will further cut on escalating housing prices in Windhoek," said the mayor.
The housing units are estimated to cost 800,000 Namibian dollars (61,500 U.S. dollars), 200,500 Namibian dollars (15,400 dollars), less than market prices.
Launching the project, Sophia Shaningwa, Minister of Rural and Urban Development, urged the developer to deliver quality and practice fairness.
"Opportunities for the allocation work to developer and post the construction to the people must be done on merit. Fairness should be upheld at all times by those who will be responsible," said the minister.
The houses will be developed through a joint venture partnership with Oluzizi Engineering and Construction, a Namibian company. The construction is set to be completed within six months. Enditem
