HANOI, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will nearly double its sand area to 7,000 hectares by 2025 to raise prawns, its agriculture ministry said on Wednesday.

The 7,000 hectares in coastal areas in Vietnam's central region will annually churn out over 110,000 tons of prawns, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The country harvests 41,705 tons of prawns each year from over 3,700 hectares of aquaculture ponds created on sand.

Vietnam plans to make a total seafood output of nearly 6.9 million tons, including roughly 3.1 million tons of wild seafood and 3.8 million tons of cultured one this year, while reaping seafood export turnovers of 7.1 billion U.S. dollars, according to the ministry.
