KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 17 (Xinhua) -- One civilian was killed and one dozen people wounded after a twin blasts rocked Kandahar city, capital of Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar Tuesday night, the provincial government spokesman said on Wednesday.

"The first blast came in Chaok-e-Madad locality roughly at 8:30 p.m. local time Tuesday and the second explosion occurred minutes later when responding police was inspecting the site," spokesman Samim Khpalwak told Xinhua.

The injured, included three police officers and nine civilians, were shifted to Mirwais Hospital in the city, 450 km south of the Afghan capital of Kabul.

Security situation has been improving in Kandahar, the stronghold of Taliban, over the last months, as security forces have conducted several search and cordon operations across the province.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban militant group has launched similar attacks in the past.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since April 28 when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive in different places of the country, which had claimed hundreds of lives including militants, security personnel and civilians.

The Taliban urged civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants and warned people not to support the government.
