MONROVIA, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Tuesday called for more investment in the agriculture sector to end hunger in the west African country.
Sirleaf, while launching Liberia's Zero Hunger Strategic Review Report in the capital Monrovia, said the country has the potential to grow more food and even export food in the sub-region and to other parts of the world.
It will require the collective efforts of all Liberians and international partners, with support from farmers, for Liberia to attain zero hunger by the year 2030, the country's leader said.
She urged investors to take advantage of Liberia's abundant rainfall and vast fertile land to engage in sustainable agriculture, rather than being satisfied with the importation of food.
The country's Sustainable Development Goal number two seeks to end hunger and achieve food security, including improving nutrition, as well as promoting sustainable agriculture, she noted.
Being a low-income country, Liberia relies heavily on foreign assistance.
The west African country is richly endowed with a climate favorable to agriculture, forests, mineral resources and water.
