Government troops kill two Abu Sayyaf militants in central Philippines

MANILA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said Monday that troops killed the two militants of the Abu Sayyaf group in Bohol province in the central Philippines this April.

AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said clashes broke out around 5:30 p.m. in Calape town in Bohol province on Monday, resulting in the death of one militant. The other one tried to flee but was eventually killed.

With the death of the two militants, Padilla said all the 11 Abu Sayyaf bandits that landed in Bohol province abroad three boats last April had all been neutralized.

"Bohol is now cleared of Abu Sayyaf elements," Padilla said, completing the job of killing all 11 who attended to raid the island on April 10. "It's all accounted for."

Abu Sayyaf is one of the smallest and most violent groups operating in the southern Philippines.

It is notorious for kidnappings, bombings and attacking civilians and the army.

The Philippine military has been fighting the Abu Sayyaf rebels since 2000.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the military to crush the Abu Sayyaf militants.
