COPENHAGEN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The Danish government announced on Thursday that the temporary border control at the Danish-German border would be extended until Nov. 12 of this year.
The announcement came just a week after the European Commission called on Denmark to phase out border checks.
However, the European Council adopted an implementing decision on Thursday setting out a recommendation to prolong temporary internal border controls in exceptional circumstances.
Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway may prolong proportionate temporary border controls for a maximum period of six months, according to the recommendation.
Denmark's temporary border control with Germany was introduced on Jan. 4, 2016. Since then, it has been extended several times.
According to the Danish immigration authorities, nearly 3,000 people were rejected in 2016 from entering Denmark either from the Danish-German border in southern Jutland or by ferries on Lolland-Falster islands.
