LIMA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China has become the second source of Asian tourists going to Peru, said the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Eduardo Ferreyros, on Wednesday.

In a press conference about Peru's tourism plans, the minister said that China now stood only behind Japan, which is in first place for Asian tourists. He added that trends showed Asian tourists will increasingly enter Peru in the future.

For Ferreyros, the increase in Chinese tourists is due to intense campaigns that Peruvian authorities have been carrying out in certain Chinese cities to attract more visitors.

Another cause for the rise in Chinese tourists, he said was that Peru had eliminated visa requirements for Chinese citizens who already possess visas for the U.S., the Schengen Zone, the U.K. or Australia.

According to Ferreyros, the government of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has been working hard to drive Chinese tourism in Peru and to make it a permanent fixture in the Asian country.

He said that, as a result of this, Peru was named "Best Tourism Destination in the Americas" at the Shanghai World Travel Fair -SWTF 2017 in April.

According to official Tourism Ministry projections, Peru will receive around 35,000 Chinese tourists in 2017.
