WINDHOEK, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Namibian President Hage Geingob on Wednesday launched the revised Editor's Forum of Namibia Code of Ethics during the celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Windhoek, calling on stakeholders' re-dedication towards promoting press freedom in the country.
Amendments on the code of ethics include elements stipulated in the Communication Act as well as other reporting requirements on social aspects including elections.
According to Geingob, the media has a critical role to play in promoting accountability and transparency, adding that in light of the country's drop in press freedom, this can improve.
Rating of the 2017 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders shows that Namibia dropped to number 24, from 17th in press freedom. "As a country, we want our media to be the freest in the world," said Geingob.
Geingob also pledged to promote press freedom for the country to thrive. "As long as I am President of Namibia the freedom of the press is guaranteed."
