YANGON, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar government has authorized its embassies abroad to accept foreigners' application for permanent residency in Myanmar rather than submitting to Yangon, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.

Previously, the applicants had to pay 500 U.S. dollars as application fees to the embassies concerned.

According to the Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population, from January 2015 to March 2016, out of a total of 188 foreigners who applied for permanent residency, 143 were approved.

At present, out of 55 applicants for permanent residency, only 28 will be granted, the ministry said.

The permanent residency system applies to foreign experts, intellectuals, investors and business people required by the country as well as, former citizens who can contribute to the development of the country, the ministry added.

The system will enable eligible foreign applicants to stay in Myanmar for five years with a possibility of further extension.
