NEW YORK, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Grammys Awards will move from Los Angeles to New York in 2018 to mark the 60th anniversary show.
"Playing host to the music industry's marquee awards show is a unique creative, artistic and economic boon to the rich cultural fabric of our city," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement on Tuesday.
Next year's main event of the music industry's premier awards is set to take place on Jan. 28 at Madison Square Garden, which has hosted the Grammys twice, in 2003 and 1997, it will once again air on CBS.
According to the Mayor's office, the Grammys are expected to bring about 200 million U.S. dollars in economic benefits to the city as well as an additional several hundred million in tourism.
The Recording Academy, the body of music professionals that administers the awards, announced the news on social media with a short video by New York director Spike Lee, which a press release calls "a musical tour of the city."
However, the venture into NYC is a one-year deal for the Grammys, which will return to Los Angeles in 2019.
Since the first awards in 1959, the Grammys have rotated back and forth between New York and Los Angeles. But Los Angeles has kept the Grammys since 2004.
