ELDORET, Kenya, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police and wildlife rangers on Tuesday arrested suspected poachers and seized six pieces of ivory worth 30,000 U.S. dollars in Eldoret in northwest Kenya.
The police and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers trailed the suspects after a tip off by the members of the public and arrested the suspects at Eastleigh residential area in Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu County.
Eldoret West divisional police commander Samuel Mutunga said the officers raided part of the Eastleigh estate and managed to seize 30 kilograms of ivory in a black vehicle driven by the suspects.
Mutunga said they have launched investigations into the source of the ivory adding that some suspects were still at large. He said they have launched a manhunt for the missing suspects.
He said the suspects are in custody and they will appear in court Wednesday.
The arrests of the suspects came amid spirited effort put by the government and the international organization to stamp out rampant illegal wildlife trade in the country.
He appealed to the public to volunteer information to police and the Wildlife officials of any illegal wildlife trade in their area.
