SAN FRANCISCO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit Monday about 145 kilometers, or 90 miles, west of Adak, a town located on Adak Island in Alaska.
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said the quake took place 9:01 a.m. local time, or 10:01 a.m. U.S. Pacific time (19:01 UTC), at depth of 1.6 kilometer, or 1.0 mile.
A map shown together with a posting on the center's website about the event indicated that the epicenter was offshore.
Adak, of the Aleutians West Census Area, which is the town closest to the epicenter, had a population of 326, according to the 2010 U.S. census.
While there has been no immediate report of injury or damage from the latest quake, Alaska experienced 4 tremors in the previous 48 hours, including a magnitude 5.2 one some 147 kilometers, or 91 miles, southwest of Anchorage, the largest city of the U.S. state in the northwest extremity of North America.
