Tokyo stocks open sharply higher ami Macron's win in French presidential election

TOKYO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Monday after pro-European Union centrist Emmanuel Macron won Sunday's French presidential election.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 287.44 points, or 1.48 percent, from last Tuesday to 19,733.14, marking its highest intraday level since Dec. 18, 2015.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 22.83 points, or 1.47 percent, to 1,573.13.

All industry categories on the main section advanced, with mining, insurance, and oil and coal product issues comprising those that gained the most in early trade.

Markets here were closed for three days from Wednesday for the Golden Week string of national holidays.
