YANGON, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar is striving to enlist Bagan, an ancient city in the central part of the country with thousands of pagodas, as a world cultural heritage, by enhancing conservation of the heritage site.

Nomination dossier will be tendered at the end of September and the document and management plan be submitted in January next year, the Myanmar News Agency reported on Sunday.

As a follow-up, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) will come to Bagan cultural zone for inspection, Minister of Religious Affairs and Culture Thura U Aung Ko was quoting as saying.

He also stressed the amendment of the 1998 Protection and Preservation of Cultural Heritage Regions Law to suit the current situation.

In fact, the plan to have Bagan Cultural Zone be listed as the world heritage was launched in 1996 and the plan was resumed in 2017.

There are more than 3,000 pagodas and religious edifices in Bagan and the number of tourists visiting the archaeological site has been on the rise with the tourism boom since the opening-up of the country.

Bagan was hit by a 6.8-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 24 last year and restoration work have been underway with a total of 249 out of 389 quake-affected pagodas having been renovated so far.

The remaining 140 spoiled pagodas will also be repaired under a four-year project of restoration of the quake-affected pagodas without damaging its architectural value.
