BOGOTA, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Colombian Minister for Post-conflict and Human Rights Rafael Pardo confirmed Thursday that a dissident faction of the FARC guerrilla will free a UN envoy kidnapped on Wednesday.
Arley Lopez from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was seized in a remote area of the southern province of Guaviare, where FARC dissidents operate.
The seizure of the UN official happened just before President Juan Manuel Santos received on Thursday a delegation from the UN Security Council, which expressed its support for the peace process.
"This official had come from a social meeting, In this area, we are aware that the FARC dissidents have a presence. They announced they would free him today," Pardo told local media.
Last November, President Santos and the FARC's top leader Rodrigo Londono signed a peace agreement that was approved by the Congress.
However, a number of FARC members have rejected the agreement and continued their struggle.
