KIGALI, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Ministers of foreign affairs from all over Africa will meet in Rwanda's capital Kigali on Sunday to discuss implementation of the proposed African Union (AU) reforms, said the Rwandan ministry of foreign affairs.
In a statement released on Thursday, the consultative meeting on the AU reforms is slated for May 7 in Kigali.
In last July, at the 27th AU summit in Kigali, member states of the AU entrusted Rwandan President Paul Kagame with the mandate to lead the African Union reforms to enable the union to better meet its mission's goal and truly serve African citizens.
In January, the proposed reforms were adopted by all heads of state and governments of AU in Addis Abba, Ethiopia.
"President Paul Kagame will be hosting the 54 foreign ministers from all African countries as well as all African Ambassadors accredited to the African Union to discuss the way forward in the implementation of these reforms," said the statement.
Key reforms include making sure Africa speaks with one voice and better manages its partnership with the rest of the world, financing AU activities to ensure sustainability and managing the business of AU more efficiently and effectively.
Last month, Kagame met with Presidents Alpha Conde of Guinea, Idriss Deby of Chad, and AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat in Conakry of Guinea to discuss on the implementation roadmap of the AU reforms.
The meeting called for urgency in the implementation of AU reforms adopted in January this year in readiness for the rapid changes in the global context.
