BANGKOK, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Thai job seekers are suggested to beware of unlicensed, fraudulent agents who might call for a large sum of money in exchange for jobs overseas only to be finally denied.
Department of Employment director general Varanon Peetiwan said on Thursday that a number of Thai females had been cheated by those job agents who had promised them jobs in Canada, Spain, Iceland and New Zealand, among others around the globe, and urged each of the job seekers to pay as much as 100,000 baht (about 2,857 U.S. dollars) in vaguely-defined expenditure.
But the promised jobs at workplaces in those foreign countries such as residences, massage parlors and fruit orchards with up to 4,200 U.S. dollars in monthly pay would not be eventually provided to those who might have fallen prey to the fraudulent job agents, the department chief said.
He advised the job seekers, especially females, to only consult with officials of the department in bid to find jobs overseas in legal fashion and spare themselves so much money which they might otherwise lose to the unlicensed job agents.
Those found to have operated job placement without license or to have cheated on job seekers are subject by law to a maximum of 10 years in jail or a maximum of 200,000 baht (about 5,714 U.S. dollars) in fine or both.
