THE HAGUE, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Vitesse won the Dutch Cup, the KNVB Beker, for the first time in club history after defeating AZ 2-0 in the final in Rotterdam on Sunday.
AZ started the match in good form with Derrick Luckassen hitting the crossbar from a freekick in the 3rd minute and Wout Weghorst missing the target. After the storm of AZ in the first quarter the match dropped to a mediocre level and both teams hardly had chances.
Striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when he headed in a cross by Milot Rashica. AZ goalkeeper Tim Krul misjudged the cross completely. Wolfswinkel decided the match two minutes from time with his second goal.
For Vitesse it is the first major trophy in the club's 125-years history. The Arnhem based club never won the championship and lost their three previous Dutch Cup finals in 1912, 1927 and 1990.
As winner of the Cup Vitesse qualified for the group phase of the Europa League next season.
