BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The northwestern U.S. city of Portland has come up with a new idea for renewable natural gas -- to convert waste methane from sewage into diesel fuel, U.S. technology news website Engadget reported Friday.

The Portland City Council recently approved the methane recovery project, which will replace 1.34 million gallons of dirty diesel fuel a year and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 21,000 tons a year.

"We're going to be turning poop into power," Commissioner Nick Fish was quoted by the local news website The Oregonian as saying.

The project is also expected to generate at least 3 million U.S. dollars in revenue a year, depending on the value of the credits in energy markets, according to the Oregonian article.

The facility will be built at the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant, which already uses much of its methane to generate electricity and heat.
