MANILA, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has cancelled the tsunami advisory after a 7.2-magnitude quake struck off the coast of southern Philippines early on Saturday.
The institute has cancelled the tsunami advisory for minor sea level disturbance as of 6:54 a.m. local time.
"Tsunami threat is over and only 10 cm wave was produced," Chief Philippine volcanologist Renato Solidum said.
The earthquake struck southern Philippine Mindanao Island on Saturday. The quake rocked Sarangani town province at 4:23 a.m. at a depth of 57 km. The epicenter was traced 153 km southwest of Sarangani in Davao Occidental on Mindanao Island.
The institute recorded several aftershocks after the initial quake, which was tectonic in origin.
News reports said that some building were damaged by the powerful quake.
Saturday's quakes are the latest in a series of moderately strong quakes that struck the Philippine archipelago since last week.
