RIO DE JANEIRO, April 26 (Xinhua) -- A controversial labor reform bill was approved late Wednesday by the House of Representatives in Brazil.
The reform bill was passed 296 against 177 in the House, a victory for President Michel Temer, who is trying to pass the reforms to modernize Brazil's labor relations.
According to the government, the reform is necessary for generating jobs and helping the country get out of a lingering economic crisis.
However, the bill has received severe criticism from opponents who fear that the new labor law would lead to deteriorating work conditions for the majority of workers, including longer hours and less income and benefits.
There are also concerns it would result in tax reductions with no immediate significant improvement in sight.
After clearing the House, the bill will be sent to the Senate as more sectors and trade unions are planning to join a strike scheduled for Friday, declared as a protest against the government reforms.
