JALALABAD, Afghanistan, April 26 (Xinhua) -- At least 28 Islamic State (IS) militants were killed during a ground offensive and ensuing airstrikes in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar since early Tuesday, the provincial government said on Wednesday.

"The cleanup operation was conducted in Asad Khel and Ragha localities of Achin district and a huge number of weapons and ammunition were also destroyed," it said in a statement.

The operation was part of the nationwide major military operation codenamed "Hamza" and the raid will continue until the area is cleared of IS militants.

No security force member of civilian was hurt during the raid, the statement noted.

Achin is the stronghold of IS militants in the province, 120 km east of Afghan capital of Kabul. It has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants since the emergence of IS there in early 2015.

On April 13, the U.S. forces in Afghanistan struck an IS cave complex by the largest non-nuclear bomb in the mountainous Achin district, killing nearly 100 IS fighters and destroying a militants' hideout together with several bunkers and tunnels.

The militant group has yet to make comments.
