CHICAGO, April 25 (Xinhua) - With five more people killed in Chicago over the weekend, the number of victims shot in this third largest U.S. city has passed 1,000.
Data collected by the Chicago Tribune show that by Monday morning, some 1,050 people had been shot in Chicago so far this year, as against 924 people shot by June 8 of 2016, 820 by June 8 of 2013 and 981 by June 8 of 2012.
Chicago also experienced a violent Easter weekend on April 16-17, when two men were killed and 43 other people were wounded in shootings, the data show.
At a news conference after Easter holiday, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson acknowledged that although his department has made some progress, "by no means are we claiming victory."
