BEIRUT, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag announced on Monday the death of Lord Michael C. Williams, former UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon.
Lord Williams, 67, died on Sunday in Britain, according to a statement by Sigrid Kaag.
She expressed her sincere condolences to Lord Williams' family.
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Williams as Special Coordinator from 2008 to 2011.
Ban Ki-moon set up the UN special coordinator for Lebanon post following the 33-day devastating July-August 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel to represent the secretary-general in the country's political and coordination issues.
The UN coordinator post also maintains regular contact with Lebanon's neighbors and other countries to promote the full implementation of resolution 1701 plus other initiatives related to Lebanon.
Resolution 1701 calls for an immediate end of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese Army's deployment along the border with Israel, establishing a weapons-free zone south of the Litani River and the disarmament of Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias.
