8 killed, 40 injured in bus accident in eastern India

NEW DELHI, April 24 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and 40 others injured as a bus carrying them skidded off the road at a sharp curve in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, police said Monday.

The accident took place near Pithoria in Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

Police said the victims were part of a marriage party.

"Some people, according to eyewitnesses, were sitting on the roof of the bus," a police official said.

According to police, the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve on the road.

Following the accident, locals and police rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.

The injured have been sent to a hospital in Ranchi for treatment.

Local Chief Minister Raghubar Das has expressed grief over the accident and announced a monetary relief for the killed and injured in the mishap.

Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions and reckless driving.
