NEW YORK, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar climbed against most major currencies on Friday ahead of the closely-watched French presidential election due on Sunday.
The euro dipped against the greenback as investors became cautious before the election. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.20 percent at 99.975 in late trading.
In late New York trading, the euro declined to 1.0697 dollars from 1.0718 dollars, and the British pound fell to 1.2796 dollars from 1.2811 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar climbed to 0.7543 U.S. dollar from 0.7528 U.S. dollar.
The U.S. dollar bought 109.20 Japanese yen, lower than 109.32 yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.9985 Swiss franc from 0.9984 Swiss franc, and it edged up to 1.3504 Canadian dollars from 1.3480 Canadian dollars. Enditem
