KATHMANDU, April 21 (Xinhua) -- A supposed avalanche on Barun river, an auxiliary river, has blocked Arun river in eastern Sankhuwasbha district of Nepal since Thursday afternoon, local authorities said.

Shivaj Raj Joshi, chief district officer of the district, told Xinhua over phone that Arun River has been blocked at Bhotkhola village, about 80 km north of district headquarters Khandbari since 4:00 pm Thursday. "As a result, only 25 percent of water has flown in the Arun downward," he said.

According to Joshi that although they are yet to confirm what caused the blockage on the Arun river because of remoteness of the area, avalanche has been believed to be reason as debris brought by Barun river blocked the Arun.

District Administration Office (DAO), Sankhuwasbha has not got any report of human causality due to river blockage on the river as of Friday morning. However, Joshi said they have received report that the path leading to Kimathanka, border point with China, has been damaged and some houses have been submerged due to rising water level.

"We have issued warning to people living close to river to shift to other places," said Joshi.
